From kale to kittens or potatoes to puppies, all living things contain a collection of DNA that makes up their genome. Your genome contains the instructions that make you who you are. It determines everything from the colour of your hair to how you perceive the flavor of cilantro. It can also tell us what diets and medications will work best for us, how at risk we are for developing a certain disease and how likely we are to pass it on to our children.
Your exome includes all the regions in your DNA that code for genes that make proteins. Proteins are both the building blocks of your cells and the tools they use to carry out functions. For example, the abundance of the protein lactase is what gives our bodies the ability to break down lactose, without it, we are lactose intolerant. Because your exome covers all of your genes, it has much more information than targeted panels. This is important when looking at risk associations or complex conditions where the symptoms are generic enough to cover multiple panels. Whole Exome Sequencing is for those who want to have a broader look at their genomes than what is offered by targeted panels and gain insight into their vulnerabilities and variants they may pass to their offspring.
When we sequence your whole genome we are sequencing all of your DNA. This is much more information than the exome, which is 1-2 % of the size of the genome. The benefits of this technique is that it is comprehensive and can uncover vulnerabilities that cannot be seen by the other techniques, including all the information of the exome and information about how it is organized. As the field of genomic research is continually growing in information, we are learning more and more about how these extra regions are implicated in human health. WGS enables us to examine all of your genome for risks.
We all have a community of microorganisms living within and on our bodies – this is called as our “microbiome”. The community of microbes may consist of bacteria, fungi, protozoa, and viruses.
